Gallery History

Karin Bravin and John Post Lee opened John Post Lee Gallery in 1991 in a small space on the 10th floor of 588 Broadway. There they exhibited work by: Fabian Marcaccio, Carl Ostendarp, Chris Pfister, Alexis Rockman, Megan Williams, Kenny Goldsmith and Emil Lukas.

In 1994 the gallery changed its name to Bravin Post Lee and moved to a ground floor space at 80 Mercer Street. There they continued to exhibit the aforementioned artists and had exhibitions of work by Jennifer Steinkamp, Monique Prieto, Robert Melee, Lee Boroson, Jonathan Seliger, Jonathan Lasker, and Chris Finley.

In 2001 the newly formed partnership of Karin Bravin, John Post Lee and Jay Gorney opened Gorney Bravin + Lee in a large ground floor space at 534 West 26th Street. The gallery mounted shows of James Siena, Paul Noble, Gillian Wearing, Justine Kurland, Allen Ruppersberg, Uwe Kowski, Cathy Opie, Neil Jenney, Simon Periton, Fabian Marcaccio, James Welling, and Barbara Bloom among others.

Today

BravinLee programs opened in the spring of 2006 with a commitment to drawings and works on paper. After 15 years of having a “traditional” gallery Bravin and Lee have chosen to specialize. BravinLee programs will privilege and concentrate on this single complex and beautiful art form.

BravinLee programs will work with emerging, as well as established artists. Strong working relationships with other dealers is crucial to their program. The gallery looks forward to mounting simultaneous exhibitions with their colleagues and offering a platform for artists to exhibit their works on paper. They also work with several artists at the early stages of their career as their primary gallery.

Public Art

In addition, BravinLee programs will focus on public art and site-specific installations.

BravinLee programs curated and produced Studio in the Park; 11 site specific installations in Manhattan’s Riverside Park. (in coordination with NYC Parks Dept. and Riverside Park Fund).

In June 2006, in cooperation with Thomas Schulte, Berlin, the gallery presented Fabian Marcaccio’s
U.N. Paintant at ArtUnlimited Basel Art Fair.

In November 2006 through January 2007, Illumination I, an Installation by Michael Somoroff was on the grounds of The Rothko Chapel, in Houston Texas. The sculpture/installation traveled to the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut, in July of 2007 through October 2007.

In June 2007, BravinLee programs collaborated with Michael Somoroff again for the installation of Illumination, an immersive video environment on the ground floor of 508 West 26th Street, below the gallery’s office and exhibition space on the second floor.
